The purpose of this educational seminar is to provide the opportunity for Americans to learn first-hand about specifics of the German Dual Vocational System/ Apprenticeship System in comparison to vocational/apprentice training in the United States. We will travel to Siemens Automation & Drives (A&D) Factory in Amberg and visit to the Siemens Technical Academy, of the Siemens Professional Education (SPE) in Munich. Additionally we will visit several apprentice / dual education schools, and the organized labor training centers, as well as the German Union Federal (DGB). As always we will enjoy the cultural climate in Munich.

The seminar will address such questions as:

  • How is industry integrated into the training programs?
  • What options for apprenticeship are utilized?
  • What do the work sites/training centers look like?
  • How do they function? What do the students produce?
  • How are they integrated into the workforce at the job site?
  • How is the Siemens Technical Academy delivering the Mechatronics Certification program?
  • How are professions created to match the market demand?
  • What options for continuing and adult education are available?
  • How are outmoded professions treated?
  • How is the union model structured in Germany

Visits to work sites/training centers are the pivotal component to this seminar. Participants will visit a variety of training/job sites as a group and will also break into special interest groups for a more in-depth look at smaller enterprises. Everyone will have ample opportunity for interaction with experts, instructors and of course, the apprentices. In addition to each day's intensive schedule, there are discussion sessions planned for the American seminar participants to review and brainstorm.

Who should participate?

The following groups of people would benefit from this seminar: educators, vocational trainers/administrators, civic and business representatives, union representatives, apprenticeship coordinators and college students.
